My hubby’s mom turned 60 years old last Monday. We decided to give her a “surprise” Luau party the day before her actual natal day.
We were told by hubby’s Aunt Nida (the youngest of Mama Lydia’s sisters) that way before, Mama Lydia commented baka if I can plan her 60th party, she’s just too shy to ask me. Of course I said yes right away! Hindi niyo naitatanong, i moonlight as a wedding coordinator too =) And this is for Alvin’s mom, who for me is the most selfless and loving person in the entire world! Mala-Cory Aquino yan.
I got really excited and noted down all the things that we need with corresponding budget. Hubby took one look at it and said to tone it down (as in way down). I came close to tears! How can we plan a bongga party with that budget?! It is highly improbable! But Alvin and his cousins proved me wrong. The party turned out to be one of the best that I have been to. Each details were lovingly prepared by each of the family members!! I’ll make kwento here one by one so I can show you how to make the best Luau party in the smallest budget you can imagine!
THE VENUE & FOOD
You can call it serendipity because we went to this place inside our village to eat mabilis na dinner before we were supposed to head out again to find a venue for the party. Pero we found the perfect venue there! It’s called Privy Bistro. It’s located in Armstrong Ave., Phase 1 Moonwalk Village Paranaque. The venue is mala-Gerry’s Grill pero a little more quirky. The roof is made of the material of the nipa hut’s roof. Everthing has a native and wooden feel to it. I love the dark colored wooden tables and chairs and the big nipa huts scattered in the place. The food was great and the staff were awesome. Super helpful and attentive! But what I like best about it is that it’s very, very affordable. The venue and catering bill was shouldered by hubby and his brother. I highly recommend this place for intimate parties (weddings, debuts, birthday party, christmas parties etc)
THE CAKE
The cake was my mom’s birthday gift to Mama Lydia. I ordered it, as usual, from Red Ribbon. I had a slight conflict with them but I am very thankful for Mr. Terrence, one of the area managers of Red Ribbon, for ironing things out. I thought lilipat na ako ng brand but I felt, after the “incident”, Red Ribbon indeed values their customers. I highly commend them for their immediate action led by like I said, Mr. Terrence.
Program
THE EKLAVERS!
These are the notable details that the cousins of Alvin prepared.
The Leis.
Alvin’s cousins DIYed the leis. If you buy these in Divisoria, it will cost Php 50 each. And not to brag ha, I think the ones they made were much much better than those being sold in Divi =) They cut out pieces of straw and bought plastic soft flowers and tied them all together in a yarn.
The Welcome Drinks
Sila lang ang nagtimpla nito. They bought small umbrellas and put them in sliced pineapples to decorate the plastic glasses I bought at a grocery store to create a tropical drink.
Sign Frame
They bought a ready made elegant sign frame and placed the picture I had printed out at Kodak.
Upon arrival of the guests, we gave them leis that they wore all through out the party, welcome drinks and made them sign their birthday greetings on the sign frame. I swear, with the reggae and bossa songs playing in the background, I felt we were in Hawaii!!!!

THE DECORS
60th birthday ideas for men
Eto I really really appreciated! I am super not patient with creating stuff. I’d rather hire an event stylist to do the decors of the party. But here, Alvin’s cousins created flowers out of crepe papers, strung them in the “vines” they bought in Coastal Mall, cute dangling kakikayan made of crepe papers and pumped balloons tons of balloons while Li-Anne taught them how to make balloon flowers. Kabog the decors!!! Parang professional lang ang gumawa! =D
AVP PRESENTATION
Hubby & Katie (with me and the other cousins providing them with comic relief) created an AVP of pictures of Mama Lydia. It included photos of her during her bell bottom days, her travels, with her friends and families. After the presentation, I saw Mama Lydia get teary eyed =)
THE PROGRAM
I made a program na parang debut lang. Mama Lydia had 10 Roses, 10 Wishes, “How Well Do You Know The Celebrant” Games (with prizes I bought at Baclaran), the Audio Visual Presentation, Cake Blowing and the Celebrant’s Speech. The program was short but super touching. Her brothers, nephews, sons and husband danced with her to the delight of the guests. Her friends, cousin, sisters and daughters in law shared their wishes for her.
All in all, I say we all did a great job. Mama Lydia was clueless about the party. Yeah, she knows it will be Hawaiian because she needed to buy a dress and I had her hair and make up done at the nearby parlor (Signey Parlor -which i highly recommend!) but where and the guests, she had no idea!!! She was super touched talaga and that’s all that matters!!
Here are the pictures from that night:
Birthday cake from Red Ribbon. Sorry I picked this cake, walang connection sa luau! The perfect cake that I wanted takes a long time to make and hindi aabot sa event. We settled for this instead.
The party place, Privy Bistro. Cozy, intimate and swak na swak sa theme! See the decors? DIY yan!!!
Anika wasn’t in the mood (as usual!). If she didn’t come out of me, I would wonder if we were related! She doesn’t like crowds and parties!! So unlike Nanay!!! Well, come to think of it, I think she got it from her Tatay.. Right Babe? Anika was wearing the Baby Guess shirt that I just bought her with this adorable violet tutu from SM Department store.

Wowa came to support us and to greet Mama Lydia =)
The Sombrero family. See how adorable my baby girl is? =) Sorry I look ngarag. I was walking here, there, everywhere, minding to the small details that the party needed.
Some of Alvin’s cousins in their Hawaiian attires. By the way, we required our guests to be in their hawaiian attires. So happy because almost everyone complied!
This was when Mama arrived. She looked so surprise and happy. She was in tears na already dito pa lang. Then she started squealing when she saw her officemates, relatives and friends inside.
Mama Lydia in front of her tarpaulin. Nice the tarp diba? See the balloon flowers, DIY din yan!
Greetings
Here are some of Alvin’s other cousins who manned the registration table. You can see here how pretty the leis that they made!
